Doctor-led, SAHPRA-approved treatment South Africa

Pricing

What the programme costs

You pay for the medical programme, not for a box of medication with a mark-up. Nothing is due upfront: you only pay once your assessment has been reviewed by a doctor and you decide to go ahead. Start with a one-off consult, or join the programme where the reviews, coaching and support live.

What sits outside the price

Two things are not part of the membership fee, and it is fairer to say so on this page than to let you find out later.

What it is Who bills you What to expect
The medical programme GLP1 Weightloss R850 once-off, R299 a month, or R2,999 a year. Charged only once your assessment has been reviewed and you decide to start.
The medication, where a doctor decides it is appropriate The licensed pharmacy that dispenses it Billed separately at pharmacy pricing on the day. The amount depends on the treatment and the dose you settle on. See what treatment costs for indicative ranges.
Blood tests The pathology lab Billed by the lab that runs them. Often claimable from a medical savings account.
Not included in the programme fee: the medication, which the licensed pharmacy bills you for directly where a doctor decides it is appropriate, and blood tests, which the pathology lab bills for. Everything else on this page is inside the fee.

Why medication is billed separately

We are a medical service, not a pharmacy. A licensed South African pharmacy dispenses your medication, couriers it in cold chain between 2 and 8 degrees, and invoices you for it directly. That separation is deliberate and it is how it should be.

Why bloods are billed separately

Baseline blood tests are run by an independent pathology lab, which charges its own tariff. Your doctor tells you which tests are needed and issues the forms. Many medical schemes settle these from a savings benefit.

What that means for you in practice

  • Budget for two lines, not one: the programme fee, and the pharmacy invoice for medication where treatment is recommended.
  • The programme fee is fixed and predictable. The pharmacy amount moves with the treatment and the dose.
  • Bloods are usually a once-off at the start, with repeats only where a doctor asks for them.
  • If treatment is not recommended for you, there is no medication to pay for.

Medical aid

Will my scheme pay for this?

Usually not, at least not for weight-loss treatment on its own. Obesity is not classed as a minimum benefit that South African schemes are obliged to cover, so most members pay for the treatment itself out of pocket.

There are two places cover can still turn up. Some plans let you settle the cost from a medical savings account, which is still your own money but does move the spend into your scheme. And where a related condition such as type 2 diabetes is being treated, part of the picture may fall under a chronic benefit. Blood tests are the item most often paid from savings.

None of this is a rule anyone can apply on your behalf. Benefits differ by scheme, by plan and by year, so check the specifics with your own scheme before you assume anything. Our longer guide on medical aid cover goes through it in more detail.

Nothing is claimed on your behalf. You deal with your scheme directly.

Four things to ask your scheme

  • Is there a savings benefit available, and how much of it is left this year?
  • Does any part of my care fall under a chronic benefit for a related condition?
  • Are the blood tests covered, and do they need to be done at a particular lab?
  • What paperwork does the scheme want from my doctor, and are there co-payments?

Straight answers

The questions people actually ask

Money questions deserve plain answers. Here are the four that come up most often, without the small print.

Two things sit outside the membership. Medication, where a doctor decides it is appropriate, is billed by the licensed pharmacy that dispenses it. Blood tests are billed by the pathology lab, and are usually claimable from a medical savings account. Everything else, the assessment, the doctor reviews, the follow-ups, your coach and the member app, is inside the fee you see above.

No. The eligibility check and the initial review come first. You pay nothing until your assessment has been reviewed and you decide to go ahead. If a doctor decides treatment is not right for you, that is explained to you, and there is no medication to pay for.

Yes. The monthly programme has no lock-in and you can cancel anytime. The annual plan is paid once for the year. Worth knowing before you decide: weight tends to return when treatment stops abruptly, so stopping is something to plan with your doctor rather than on your own.

The once-off consult at R850 suits you if you want a professional read and a plan without an ongoing membership. Most people who decide to treat move onto the programme, where the reviews and support live. Nobody can tell you in advance how much weight you will lose, on either option, and your result can be different from anyone else's.
