Often the missing piece isn’t on your plate at all. It’s how you’re sleeping and how much pressure you’re carrying. Sleep and stress sit underneath appetite, cravings and energy like a foundation under a house: when they’re shaky, everything built on top starts to lean.
It’s overlooked partly because it feels so indirect. A bad night doesn’t put food in your mouth. What it does is change the chemistry that decides how hungry you feel tomorrow, what you crave, and how easily you talk yourself into the biscuit tin. Understanding that link is one of the most useful things you can do for your progress, and some of the fixes are gentler than another diet rule.
Appetite runs on hormones far more than on willpower, and sleep is one of the biggest levers on those hormones. When you’re short on rest, two of the main hunger signals swing the wrong way at once: the hormone that tells your brain you’re hungry rises, and the one that says you’ve had enough drops. GLP-1, one of the natural fullness hormones your own gut releases after a meal, is part of that same satisfaction system, and it works best when your body is rested and its rhythms are steady.
The result is a day where you feel hungrier, get full later, and reach for quick-energy foods like refined carbs, sugar, or that mid-afternoon pastry. Short sleep is consistently linked with eating more the next day. None of that is a character flaw. It’s just what an under-rested body does.
There’s a second effect on top of the hormones. The part of your brain that weighs long-term goals against short-term rewards runs on rest. Skimp on sleep and its grip loosens while the reward centres get louder. So you’re not only hungrier, you’re also less equipped to say no.
Stress works through a different door but ends up in the same room. Under sustained pressure, your body keeps cortisol, its main stress hormone, running high. Deadlines, money worries, a hard stretch at home: they all tend to land in the same place. In short bursts cortisol is useful. Kept elevated for weeks, it nudges appetite up and sharpens cravings for salty, sweet and fatty food. It also pushes your body to store fat around the middle.
Then there’s the behaviour we all recognise. Stress eating is real, and it isn’t greed. Sugary, starchy food does blunt the stress response for a few minutes. The relief is brief, but it teaches your brain a shortcut: feel bad, eat, feel better. Over time that loop drives a lot of eating that has nothing to do with hunger.
Poor sleep and chronic stress don’t make you lazy or weak. They quietly change the rules your body plays by, and then you get blamed for losing.
Sleep and stress feed each other. Stress makes it harder to fall and stay asleep; a poor night leaves you more reactive and less able to cope the next day. Add a disrupted evening, like a late braai, a night shift, or load-shedding knocking out the fan, and the cycle tightens. Weight sits right in the middle, pushed from both sides.
The good news is that a loop can be broken at any point. You don’t have to fix sleep and stress perfectly. Easing either one even a little tends to loosen the whole knot. For a tired, stretched person, that’s often the change that pays off the most.
You can’t always add hours, but you can protect the ones you have. Aim for a regular seven to nine hours, and give the basics a fair try for a couple of weeks before writing them off.
You can’t delete life’s pressures, but you can change how much they run you. You’re not aiming for a stress-free life, just a nervous system that gets to switch off now and then.
Physical activity is one of the most reliable ways to burn off stress hormones. A brisk walk, a stretch, anything that shifts you out of your head and into your body. It doesn’t have to be a workout to count.
Build in small, deliberate pauses through the day: a few slow breaths, ten minutes outside, a break from screens. This isn’t indulgence. You’re telling an overworked system that it’s safe to stand down.
Before you eat between meals, pause and ask whether your stomach is actually hungry or your head just needs a break. Sometimes sleep and stress aren’t just habits to tidy up. Persistent insomnia, anxiety that won’t lift, or a stress response stuck permanently in the “on” position can hold your weight in place no matter how well you eat.
