What BMI tells you
Body Mass Index is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. It’s a quick screen that sorts weight-for-height into broad ranges. It’s useful for spotting when a closer look might help, not for judging your health on its own.
- Below 18.5, underweight
- 18.5–24.9, a healthy weight range
- 25–29.9, overweight
- 30 and above, the obesity range
Where BMI falls short
BMI can’t tell muscle from fat, and it ignores where you carry weight, which matters a lot for health. A fit, muscular person can read “overweight,” while someone in the “healthy” range may still carry more fat than is ideal.
Treat BMI like a smoke alarm, not a diagnosis: helpful for telling you when to look closer, not for telling you exactly what’s wrong.
What to look at alongside it
A proper assessment considers your waist measurement, blood markers, personal and family history, and how you actually feel and function day to day. Want the full picture? Read Understanding your BMI or see how our assessment works.
